A race car seen from the side, with a spoiler, a number circle on the door and wide wheels. The number circle is the detail worth pointing at before a child starts, because it is the one place on the page where they can put something of their own: an age, a favourite number, an initial. That small act of ownership changes how the rest of the page gets colored. The body is one large block, the spoiler another, and the wheels are circles with the hubs separated inside them, so a child who cannot yet stay inside a line still produces something that reads clearly as a race car. Racing stripes are the obvious next move and they are easy here, because the body is a single wide shape with nothing in the way. Printed at A4 the car fills the width of the sheet with a clean margin. On ordinary copier paper all three of crayon, pencil and marker behave, though the hubs are small enough that a thick tip will fill them solid.

• A Formula One car generates so much downforce at speed that it could in principle drive along an upside-down ceiling, though nobody has built a tunnel to try it.
• Racing numbers were originally painted on because early races were run on public roads with no timing equipment, and officials needed some way to tell one identical-looking car from another as it went past.
