Vehicles are drawn from a small number of large shapes, which makes them unusually easy to color well. A fire truck is a box, a cab, some wheels and a ladder, and every one of those is big enough to fill without any care at all.

That simplicity is why vehicle pages suit the youngest children particularly. There is nothing thin to stay inside and nothing small to miss, so a picture that looks finished is genuinely within reach of a three-year-old.

Why vehicles suit the youngest children

Most drawings ask a child to work around something narrow. Vehicles do not. The body of a truck is one shape, the cab is another, and the wheels are circles, so a child who cannot yet stay inside a line still produces something that reads clearly as a truck. That gap between what they can do and what the picture looks like is where the confidence comes from.

Real colors, or any colors

Fire engines are red and that is worth mentioning once, because children enjoy knowing the rule. Then let them ignore it. A purple digger is not a mistake, and the child who makes one is doing something more interesting than the child copying a photograph.

If markers are likely, heavier paper is worth it: the body of a truck or digger is a large flat area, and filling one that size with a felt tip is the quickest way to make thin paper buckle as it dries.
