A helicopter flying, with rotor blades above, a tail rotor and round windows. The rotor blades are long thin shapes and the one part of this page that asks for any care, which makes them the natural thing to leave until last, or to leave white altogether. The body is a large rounded block that fills quickly, and the windows are big enough to leave clear. The skids underneath are two straight bars that take a single color in one stroke. Rescue helicopters are usually red and yellow or red and white for visibility, which gives a child a reason to use two bright colors without having to invent a scheme. Printed at A4 the rotors reach close to both edges, so print with a margin rather than borderless if the picture is going to be trimmed or framed. On ordinary copier paper crayon and pencil both work; a thick felt tip will lose the blades entirely, so pencil is the better choice for those.

Did you know?

• If the engine stops, a helicopter does not simply fall. Air flowing up through the descending rotors keeps them spinning, and a pilot can convert that stored spin into lift at the last moment to land. The manoeuvre is called autorotation and it is practised routinely.
• Leonardo da Vinci sketched an aerial screw around 1489 that was meant to lift by corkscrewing into the air. It could never have flown with the materials of the time, but the principle was not wrong.
