Mandalas, florals, and which suits your mood

The two collections ask for different things. A mandala has already decided the composition, so the only remaining choice is color, which is what makes them settling rather than absorbing. Botanical drawings give you the shapes but leave shading and blending entirely open, which is more demanding and more interesting if you want the time to pass rather than merely to be filled.

One hue, several depths

The single technique that improves adult coloring fastest is tonal rather than chromatic. Take one color and vary only its depth: palest at an outer edge, darkest where one shape passes behind another. Across a whole flower or a whole ring of a mandala it produces an illusion of dimension that mixing more colors never achieves. Pale hues show it far better than deep ones, which are already too dark for the shading to register.

Paper, printing and larger sizes

Use 120gsm or heavier if you intend to use markers, which otherwise bleed through and buckle standard copier paper wherever strokes overlap. Colored pencil is fine on ordinary paper. All the artwork is vector rather than scanned, so it scales to A3 without going soft, and the wider shapes at that size make graded shading considerably easier to control.

The online tools include zoom and pan, which matter on the denser designs where the inner segments are small. Brush, crayon and marker behave differently on purpose: the marker is semi-transparent and darkens where strokes overlap, so a second pass over the base of a petal builds depth exactly as a real marker would. Work saves itself if you close the tab.
