A big smiling slice of watermelon with rounded pips, sitting beside two whole melons. It is the simplest drawing in this category and deliberately so: very few areas, all of them large, and a subject every child can name before they start. The slice has three distinct bands running through it, the flesh, the pale rind and the dark skin, which happens to be a neat introduction to the idea that one object can be more than one color. The pips are small circles, and children either fill every one of them with great seriousness or ignore them entirely. Both outcomes are fine and the picture works either way. The three bands run right across the widest part of the sheet, so a child using the side of a crayon can fill the whole slice in a few strokes, which is exactly the kind of quick success a first page should offer.
