A unicorn leaps over a wide banded rainbow, with soft rounded clouds gathered underneath and a scatter of smaller shapes filling the sky. The rainbow is drawn as separate bands rather than one block, which is the whole point of this page: it hands a child a ready-made color ladder and a reason to use more than one crayon. Children who are still working out that colors have an order will often lay them down in whatever sequence pleases them, and that is fine. The unicorn itself is one large shape with a mane and tail flowing behind, so the figure fills quickly and the rainbow becomes the part that takes time. Printed at A4 the bands are each wide enough for a chunky crayon to travel along without straying, which matters more than it sounds when a four-year-old is pressing hard. On paper, the bands are the part that shows pressure most: a crayon dragged along a band leaves visible streaks, which some children love and others find infuriating, so felt tips are the kinder choice if that is likely to bother them. Did you know?

• A rainbow is really a full circle. We only ever see an arc because the ground cuts the bottom off, but from an aeroplane you can sometimes see the whole ring.
• No two people ever see exactly the same rainbow. It is made by light bouncing back to one specific pair of eyes, so the person standing next to you is seeing their own.
