A unicorn stands in front of a fairytale castle with round towers, pointed roofs and small flags flying from the tops. This is the busiest of our unicorn drawings and suits a slightly older child, or a younger one working alongside an adult who takes the castle while they take the unicorn. The towers are drawn as separate blocks rather than one silhouette, so the castle can be striped, banded or given a different roof color on every turret without any of it needing care. Stone is the obvious choice and the least interesting one. A castle in three shades of the same color, darker at the base and lighter towards the roofs, is the single quickest way to make a flat drawing look like it has weight, and it is well within a seven-year-old. It prints well at A4 and better at A3 if you have access to one, because the flags and the tower windows are the smallest shapes we publish on a kids page and they gain a lot from the extra size.

Did you know?

• Castle towers were often built round rather than square because a square corner could be brought down by digging away the stone underneath it. A round wall has no corner to attack.
• Spiral staircases in castle towers usually climbed clockwise, which left a right-handed defender coming down with room to swing and a right-handed attacker climbing up with the central pillar in the way.
