A tall sundae glass holds three round scoops with sauce running down, a wafer tucked in at the side and a cherry balanced on top. It is one of the simplest drawings we have, with few areas and all of them generous, which makes it a good first page for a three-year-old or a fast win for an older child who wants to finish something in five minutes. The three scoops are the useful part: they are identical shapes, so a child can be asked what flavour each one is and then has a reason to pick three different colors rather than reaching for the same crayon. Everyone knows what color ice cream should be, which is precisely why it is worth asking for a blue one. It prints small very well, so this is a sensible one to fit two or four to a sheet if you are producing a stack for a group and do not want to spend a page on each child.

- The sundae is widely said to have been invented to get around nineteenth-century American rules that banned selling ice cream sodas on a Sunday. Serving the ice cream without the soda was the workaround.
