A snowman with a scarf, a carrot nose, a hat and two stick arms. It is one of the easiest pages here and one of the most requested, which is a rare combination. The snowman itself is three circles that most children leave white, so nearly all the coloring happens in the scarf, hat and nose, and that concentration is useful: a child gets a finished picture having colored only four things. The scarf is divided into bands, which hands them a reason to use several colors without needing to plan. Filling the background is worth suggesting here, because a white snowman only reads as white once there is something behind it. A pale blue sky does more for this drawing than anything done to the figure itself. Printed at A4 there is room below the figure to write a name or a date, which is worth doing if these are going up on a window in December. If you plan to fill the sky with a marker rather than a pencil, print on paper heavier than eighty gram: a large flat area of color is the single most reliable way to make thin paper buckle and cockle as it dries. Did you know?

• The oldest known drawing of a snowman is in a book of hours from about 1380, held in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in the Hague. It is drawn in the margin, apparently for amusement.
• Snow is not white. Ice is clear, and a snowbank looks white because the many crystal surfaces scatter every wavelength of light back at you more or less equally.
