One large stocking with a plain cuff, a candy cane and a round bauble poking out of the top. It is deliberately one of the simplest drawings on the site: a handful of big shapes and nothing that needs a steady hand. That makes it a good first Christmas page for a three-year-old, or a fast win for an older child who has abandoned something more complicated. The cuff is separated from the body, so the traditional white top happens without any care being needed. The stocking itself is the largest single area we publish in this category, which means the whole picture changes character depending on one decision, and letting a child make that decision unprompted is most of the value. There is space at the top of the sheet to write a name above it, which is worth doing if these are going up on a wall or a mantel.

Did you know?

• The custom is usually traced to a story about Saint Nicholas dropping gold down a chimney for three sisters who had no dowry, where it landed in stockings left by the fire to dry.
• Hanging stockings only became widespread in the English-speaking world in the nineteenth century, spread largely by the 1823 poem A Visit from St Nicholas, which describes them hung by the chimney with care.
