Easter Bunny With a Basket Coloring Page

The eggs are the reason to choose this page over a plain rabbit: each one is divided into bands and dots, so a child gets four small pattern exercises inside a picture that is otherwise very simple. The bunny itself is a few large shapes and fills in under a minute, which means the eggs are where a child will actually spend their time. That is deliberate. A page that is finished too fast is nearly as disappointing as one that is too hard, and the eggs give somewhere for the effort to go once the easy part is done. Leaving the bunny white and coloring only the eggs and basket is a perfectly good outcome and often the better-looking one. Printed at A4 the basket sits low enough that there is room to write a name above the bunny, and on ordinary copier paper crayon and pencil both behave well. If a child wants to fill the background, a pale spring green does more for this drawing than anything done to the rabbit.

• The egg-laying hare came to America with German immigrants in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, who called it the Osterhase. Children built nests for it to lay in, which is where the basket comes from.
